This year witnessed a number of influences that stressed the domestic U.S. capacity environment: severe winter weather compounded the 2013 modifications to drivers’ hours of service requirements, resulting in capacity shortages across the rail and truck network. These shortages were exacerbated by the sharp recovery in volume trends in early 2Q, which taken in total led to pressures far greater than expected transportation budgets. Was 2014 simply a year of anomalous events or was it the beginning of what is a new era of capacity management among carriers and freight rate increases to shippers? We’ll a look back at an eventful 2014 and provide our outlook for 2015 and beyond.
