Signs of life in the freight economy emerged in 4Q13.  While US economic demand has remained sluggish, spot truckload activity was brisk in November and December; and the growth in e-commerce caused network disruptions at the venerable parcel carriers UPS and FedEx.  So, what’s in store for 2014?  On Thursday, March 20th, plan to spend your evening with The Logistics Council for what will be an outstanding dinner program regarding the State of Transportation in 2014.  Benjamin Hartford, senior research analyst at RW Baird and perennial speaker for TLC, will present an in-depth look into the current state of the Transportation industry from the perspective of a Wall Street analyst.  Armed with this new insight, you’ll return to work more prepared to tackle the challenges and opportunities expected this calendar year.

Program Overview:

The pain of the Great Recession appears to be slowly giving way to optimism of a sustainable global recovery.  The S&P 500 was up 30% in 2013—and is up over 180% from the depths of the crisis in 2009.  Economic forecasts for 2014 reflect improving growth in the US and globally.  But, plenty of risks remain:  US employment levels have yet to return to prior peak levels despite the recovery in the equity markets; developed markets remain debt-laden; and central banks (in particular, the US Federal Reserve), which have played a critical role in this recovery, are beginning to “taper” their involvement.  We take a look back at this cycle and examine some of the emerging undercurrents that, in our view, support a healthier US and global economic growth outlook in 2014.
